TOLEDO, Ohio (WTOL) - The community around Longfellow Elementary on Jackman Road is divided about whether they need a new school. A plan calls for the city and TPS to swap land to build the school at Bowman Park less than a mile away.
Signs in the yards of many home owners state they want the school to stay put. Dennis Kinney is one home owner concerned about the proposal.
"I got to believe property values will go down because there's less protection. There's not enough police to cover the city as it is. At least they watch around the school areas," Kinney said.
Others feel a new school is needed because Longfellow students have to cross dangerous traffic intersections to get to and from class.
Council's Lindsay Webb finds herself stuck in the middle of the controversy.
"We've got a PTO who adamantly wants this moved and a neighborhood group that doesn't want it moved. It's no pleasing anybody at this point," said Webb.
Legislation for the proposed swap will soon be presented to council, who will hold a public hearing before making a decision. The current TPS plan for a new Longfellow calls for construction to begin in April.
