MONROE COUNTY, MICHIGAN (WTOL) - People in Monroe County might soon have to travel further to get their drivers licenses renewed.
The fact is, the State of Michigan is considering closing the Secretary of State branch on Lewis Ave. in Temperance to help cut costs. Right now it's just a proposal, but some Michigan leaders believe it could save the State money.
But people who use the office say closing it is a bad idea. Jerry Frankart, for example, goes there at least once a week. The thought of driving to Monroe to do title work frustrates him.
"I'm already driving 35 miles from Bowling Green. So that would make it almost 50 miles," Frankart said.
Bedford Township leaders say closing the office would hurt the community. In fact, Bedford Township supervisor Walt Wilburn says it'll be more of a hassle than it's worth, especially when residents have to wait in longer lines.
"So, not only do you have to drive up there, but you may as well probably wasted a half a day of work just to do this. Who can afford that? Nobody," said Walt Wilburn. "We don't want our people to have to drive all the way to Monroe for those services."
State Senator Randy Richardville plans to fight the proposal to keep the Temperance office open.
