Lucas County extends 'bulk discount' with First Energy

Posted: Updated:

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio (WTOL) - County commissioners approved Tuesday a six-year extension with First Energy Solutions to supply electricity for customers of the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Coalition.

The deal provides a discount to residential and commercial consumers who are part of the coalition, which serves as a bulk-buying group.

All residents of Lucas County were automatically opted in to the coalition.

"We had an opportunity to lock in a rate with First Energy Solutions. It's their rate minus 5 percent. No matter what that rate does, it's always going to be under what they offer to the public on an individual basis," said Pete Gerken, president of the Lucas County Commissioners.

As part of the agreement, First Energy is making a $1.2 million lump-sum payment to Lucas County, as well as a $3.2 million payment to the city of Toledo.
