DUNDEE, MICH. (WTOL) - The H1N1 virus caused 200 Dundee students to miss school Tuesday and Wednesday after flu abscences reached 15 percent.
Around this time last year, the seasonal flu was responsible for just 4 percent of student absences. Since school started this year, however, the virus has become increasingly active among children across the country.
Dundee schools aren't alone. Since September, 73 schools in Michigan have closed, hoping to stem the spread of the virus.
Actually, the virus has killed 16 people in Michigan since September. Although none have been children, Superintendent Bruce Nelson says because H1N1 is serious, he isn't taking any chances.
"We are going to err on the side of closing earlier," Nelson said.
Not everyone got the day off. Custodians, for example, cleaned and sanitized the entire school. Parents saw the day as a small inconvenience, but most said they don't mind the decision.
Students will get a total of 5 days away from school. Both Thursday and Friday were already scheduled for teacher in-service days. Students will go back to school Monday, Nov. 9.
