TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - A new city council proposal could soon ban texting while driving in Toledo. Now there's a new cell phone application could already be the answer for the problem at hand.
According to some, when they receive a text it's hard to resist reading and responding. But the consequences could be deadly or very soon costly.
"The first time it would be a minor misdemeanor with a penalty not to exceed $100," says councilman Michael Collins.
The application is called Drive Safe.ly. It's a free application for your phone that reads your text messages out loud.
When you go to their website, you select your phone, enter your phone number, download the link sent to your phone, and turn on the application. The next text message you will get (assuming no one sends you one in the meantime) is a message from Drive Safe.ly welcoming you to their service.
And you'll hear it spoken to you.
The sender will receive an automated text message saying you heard the message and you will respond later.
Councilman Collins says you should use it if you are tempted to text while driving.
"I think it is an excellent mechanism to improve the safety of those who are using the road and it also is a very appropriate way to address this issue."
Councilman Collins says, even though he isn't a big texter, he and his wife plan to use Drive Safe.ly.
Sounds strange, but your phone must be in vibrate mode in order to hear your text message.
