TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - It's not even Halloween, but one store is starting the Christmas shopping season Friday with Black Friday sales every Saturday until Christmas.
Sears decided not to wait until after Thanksgiving to start Black Friday. So at 5:00 p.m. Friday Sears started their own Black Friday deals.
But with tighter purse strings and outrageous sales, shoppers have to be extra cautious not to get caught up and overspend.
"I am going to be very frugal this year," says Charlene Miller.
And stores know that. So this year they're already starting the battle to win your money.
Black Friday deals as well as holiday gift advertisements and sales are out already to lure shoppers into the store.
For most shoppers sales are the make or break when deciding which store to go to.
"I don't like to pay full price for anything if I don't have to," says Bonnie Eaken.
Marcia O'Conner with Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Northwest Ohio says even with sales, buyers should watch their money.
"People do it because it's a sale and they get things they really can't afford," says O'Conner. She suggests setting a budget. "Get an amount and specify and don't go beyond that and set it up for 'I'm going to spend this amount on this person and this person and this person.'"
O'Conner says to watch out for special credit card discounts this season. The offers may not be as great as you think.
"They do that because they know that you will use that card and you will overspend because you are saving that 10 or 20 percent and you will continue to use it."
Many shoppers admit to using credit cards during the holiday season. O'Conner says that's the way to do it if you are going to use your credit card.
O'Conner also says you don't want to go into the new year with debt from holiday gifts, so it pays to shop smart.
