POINT PLACE, Ohio (WTOL) - Toledo police responded to a call, were attacked and fired several shots killing 29-year-old Pyon Simmons at 2112 Northridge Drive in Point Place after he stabbed his mother Thursday morning.

59-year-old Su Ok Simmons says her son is bipolar and stabbed her with a knife and scissors several times for no reason. She was able to get help from a neighbor who took her to the hospital and contacted police.

When police arrived Simmons was in his neighbor's yard trying to steal a vehicle. According to police, he was armed two metal poles and a trash can lid.

As three TPD officers approached, Simmons came at officers. He did not respond to commands and hit two officers in the head with a pipe. Officers used a Taser on Simmons, but he pulled the pins out of his body. Two officers opened fire and Simmons was shot and killed.

Chief Navarre said his officers acted in self defense.

Officials say 55-year-old TPD Officer James Awer, a 25 year veteran, fired three times and was not injured.

38-year-old Amy Shaner, a 16 year veteran, fired one shot. She was hit twice in the head, shoulder and wrist. She works as a school resource officer at Woodward High School.

24 year veteran David O'Brien, 48, was hit on the side of his head. He was treated and released.

Su Ok Simmons is in serious condition at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Pyon Simmons had served four years in jail for a robbery in Cincinnati.
