PERRYSBURG, OH (WTOL) - A young Perrysburg boy has been inspired to help children with cancer after seeing WTOL's coverage of Alexa Brown's Journey.

10-year-old Jase Whitner took donations Thursday night at Toth Elementary School's book fair and family fun night to help keep Alexa Brown's memory alive.

The fifth grader is near the same age Alexa was when she passed away. He never met her and didn't know her personally, but says he certainly knew what she would want him to do.

Jase is collecting money for Alexa's scholarship fund and Cure Search, a group that focuses on childhood cancer research. He says he saw Alexa on the news and wanted to help. "Some kids just have to go through that and it's just sad."

One of those kids was 7-year-old Maddie Trudel who passed away in 2006.  Her aunt Maggie Laube from Perrysburg helped take care of the little girl during her 18-month fight against cancer. "She was a very dynamic young lady like Alexa and she had a really good heart and touched a lot of people."

Trudel and others felt so touched they made donations d. Jon Hawker got a gold ribbon for his daughter.

"There's a lot of good causes out there, everyone's got to fight their fight and looks like he's picked up a good one."

The Brown family was on the minds of many. "Your heart goes out to them and you want to do everything you can to help... The first thing I did was go to that table and help," said Toth Elementary Principal Beth Christoff.

Jase had a message for the browns as well. "Thank you for letting me do this and I hope you guys feel better."
