TOLEDO (WTOL) - Before most of us go on vacation, we try to look for the best bargains on flights, hotels and car rentals.
But there is a way you can cut out both the hotel and the car rental expenses: house swapping.
In fact, house swapping has given Judy Roepke the chance to travel all over the U.S. -- and around the world.
"Our first swap was with an English couple," Roepke said.
By signing on to a web site, people can look up a house anywhere in the world, contact the owner and set up a swap.
Roepke never thought she would get a bite on her house in Perrysburg. But, in fact, her house is quite popular.
"I actually had an Alaska couple that wanted to come and I really wanted to go to Alaska but I couldn't fit them in. They wanted to come this summer and I was all booked for the summer."
Next year, Roepke has swaps in Ireland, South America and Spain.
The fee to join the web site is anywhere from $100 to $500 for the year, depending on the level of membership. But based on hotel rates, the membership could pay for itself after two trips.
