2 children, mother attacked by dog in Wood County

Posted: Updated:

BAIRDSTOWN, Ohio (WTOL) - An adult and two children were injured in a dog attack near Bairdstown in southern Wood County.

Steve Rock says his two daughters, ages 8 and 12, were feeding their own dog after getting off the school bus at about 3:15 Thursday afternoon. He says a stray dog attacked them, also biting their mother. Rock says he shot the dog.

The three victims were taken to a Wood County hospital. His wife Stephanie, and 12-year-old daughter Kaycie were treated and released.

The younger daughter, Alexis, was transferred to The Toledo Hospital. She had surgery Thursday night and will have to stay a couple of days, recovering from a severe gash to her leg.

Alexis was attacked by what appears to be a bulldog or pitbull mix. Kaycie stepped in to help, and the dog attacked her.

Their mom just happened to be coming out the front door with their 8-month old foster son when the attacks occurred.

Rock says his wife laid the baby on the front porch, ran after the dog to get him off of Kaycie and told Alexis to come get him.

"She (Alexis) picked up our foster son from the front porch and was still able to wake me up," says Rock, even though she was bleeding badly.

Steve grabbed his gun, ran outside to find his wife pinned on the ground by the dog, and the family's rotweiller biting on the dog.

Steve describes the scene: "I yelled at my rot and he moved. I yelled at my wife. She moved. And I shot him."

The dog still came after Steve. He shot two more times and the dog was dead.

Steve says Alexis saved the day with her quick action by waking him up. "She's awesome. There's no words to explain it. She's the true hero there."
