TOLEDO (WTOL) - A rain garden collects storm water and filters pollutants, but there's a local one that's doubling as a tool for education.

Several students from Ottawa Hills and St. Pius schools recently took on the challenge of designing a rain garden at the Lake Erie Center. They know how important it is to figure out a way not to pollute the water we have.

That pleases a lot of people, including Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur.

"I want to congratulate the students from Ottawa Hills and St. Pius for making a real lasting contribution to our community with the construction of this rain garden," Kaptur recently told students.

Kaptur said she hopes students internalize the lessons they've learned.

"They are beginning to understand the stewardship of our most precious natural resources. They have to lead us into the future so they have to... learn solutions to the challenges we face in our ecosystem," Kaptur said.
