WHITEHOUSE, OH (WTOL) -- For these Anthony Wayne High School students, today's classroom is outside at the Blue Creek Conservation Area.

A great horned owl named Icarus kept his eyes on them.

As they walk through the fields, students learned about invasive plants and how they are not good for wildlife.

"One of them is thistle it's very hard to get rid of because it has deep roots and its leaves are very spikey," said Ann Mauro, a junior.

But there are some plants that can come in handy. The students learned which plants are edible.

"Queen Anne's Lace it's like a wild carrot and if you eat the root it tastes just like a carrot," said Alania Hem, a junior.

No one was willing to try it. But with a unique name like Queen Anne's Lace, there's always an interesting story of how it was named.

While making lace, Queen Anne pricked her finger and a drop of blood fell on the lace and stained it.

By learning all our environment has to offer these students are going to keep taking care of it.

"Remember that the world isn't going to stay the same forever and we have to learn to protect it in order to have what we have now in the future when we are adults," said Marissa Enderle, a senior.

They've all earned an "A" on today's assignment which will last for years to come.
