LENAWEE COUNTY (WTOL) - The fire started around 3:45 a.m. at a house in the 400 hundred block of Pearl St. in Morenci. Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks confirms the two people who died are 36-year-old Jeremy Rohr and his son, 12-year-old Zachari Rohr.
Word of the fire spread quickly in town. One guy cried when he told us the boy who died used to play ball in his driveway.
Had it not been for a quick thinking neighbor, others in the house might not have been saved. Weeks said one of his officers was patrolling in the area when he spotted the fire. He and a neighbor ran inside to rescue anyone trapped.
Five people lived in the house. Chief Weeks said three people got out unharmed but two people died.
Bobby Black is the neighbor who ran inside. He's got burns on his back, arms and legs. Black ran inside and rescued a two-year-old boy.
"That's the only thing I could think of, you know, just instinct to help somebody, you know what I mean. I can't see somebody laying there and not doing nothing," said Black.
Authorities are still trying to find out what started the fire.
