TOLEDO, OH - The Junior League of Toledo announces the 2009 winners of the Mary Harriman Award. Sustaining member Bridget Brell-Holt of Maumee and active member Becca Gorman of Toledo are the recipients of the award that honors long-term commitment to community service.
Prior to becoming a sustaining member of the League, Brell-Holt served the Toledo-area community as an active member of the League in various capacities for more than 14 years. She spearheaded numerous community projects led by the League and worked on several fundraisers to support those projects. Further, she served as League president in 1993 and as a dedicated mentor to several League committees and councils in the subsequent years, supporting the organization's commitment to developing women as community leaders. Most recently, Brell-Holt headed up the League's 75th Anniversary ad hoc committee, which focused on educating the community about the League's positive impact over the years. In addition, she has volunteered with several other community organizations over the years, including St. Joseph Church, St. Ursula Academy, St. John's High School and St. Vincent Medical Center Women and Children's Center.
Gorman has been an active member of the League since 1997, working on multiple projects, including Friends of Lucas County Children Services and Toledo After Hours. She also served as League president in 2006. Further, she was instrumental in bringing the Toledo Smiles and Kids in the Kitchen projects to the League. As well, Gorman has served on boards and committees of other community organizations in an effort to make a difference in the community. Those organizations include the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio, West Side Montessori Center and Komen of Northwest Ohio.
In 1997, The Junior League of Toledo created the Mary Harriman Award to identify and acknowledge one sustaining and one active member each year for their significant volunteer service. Mary Harriman, the founder of the Junior League in 1901, was a pacesetter and a visionary as well as a committed, courageous young woman who had a zest for life and a willingness to use her talents and resources to improve the social and economic conditions of her time. By recognizing exceptional local women, this award provides a contemporary link with Harriman's sense of social responsibility and her ability to encourage others to share their talents through active, effective community service.
