Man struck, killed by roller coaster at amusement park

Police say 45-year-old James A. Young II lost his personal items while riding the Raptor at Cedar Point. Young then entered a restricted area at the park to look for those lost items and was struck and killed by the roller coaster.

SANDUSKY, OH (Toledo News Now) - An East Canton, Ohio man was killed Thursday afternoon at the Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky.

Police say 45-year-old James A. Young II lost his personal items while riding the Raptor. Young then entered a restricted area at the park to look for those lost items and was struck and killed by the roller coaster.

Cory Marshall, a frequent visitor to Cedar Point, was at the park when the accident occurred. He says, "What it looked like is the coaster may have dropped from the first hill, which at it's maximum speed of 57 miles an hour, and that appears to be where the guest was probably struck."

The Raptor was then shutdown and Young's body taken to the coroner's office.

Marshall says there was no reason for this to happen.

"There are signs at every restricted area that say 'Do Not Enter.' So it doesn't appear there's going to be any fault by Cedar Point," said Marshall.

The Sandusky Police Department is conducting an investigation.

Meanwhile, a statement from Cedar Point offer's it's thoughts and prayers to the Young family:

"At approximately 5 p.m., a guest entered a restricted, fenced area of the Raptor roller coaster and was struck by the ride. Park safety officials responded immediately to the situation. Unfortunately the guest has passed away. Local authorities are on the scene conducting an investigation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time."
