Is it safe to travel during a pandemic?

If you do plan to visit another state, keep a close eye on their restrictions and case numbers, especially if they are increasing.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Summer vacation plans will look a little different this year, especially with many states still having different restrictions in place for COVID 19.

While certain types of travel may be okay right now, doctors want you to know the risks you are taking before you hit the road or get on a plane this summer.

For example, driving to your destination is safer than flying.

"Flying is always thought to be a risk; you're in an enclosed space with air that recirculates. When you're in a car and travel, it's usually with family members, people you've been co-habituating with. And when you get out of the car you can take those extra measures" said Dr. Brian Kaminski, an emergency room doctor at Promedica.

If you do plan to visit another state, keeping a close eye on their restrictions and case numbers is important, especially if they are increasing.

Avoiding large crowds, washing your hands and wearing a mask do not lose importance just because you're on vacation.

"Everything the governor has done, I've stood behind because the forefront of all this is happening to me in Texas" said Susan Randolph.

Randolph tested positive for COVID-19 back in March after being on a cruise. We spoke with her when she was quarantined on a Texas military base.

While she is planning to drive to visit family this summer, she plans to be extra careful, especially because she was asymptomatic

"I just say to everybody who wants to travel, be smart about it. Make sure you feel secure in what you're doing" said Randolph.

If someone contracts COVID-19 in another state but is tested here in Ohio, the case number is counted in Ohio.
