BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) - A Bowling Green woman who was supposed to get her roof fixed last summer is still waiting for the job to be done. So she contacted Call 11 for Action and got results.
Kristina King is a collector of many things – art, music, and now even water from a leaking roof.
Last August, King noticed her roof was leaking from a small hole, so before the problem got worse, she turned to a man she thought would be best for the job. King met Bill Wollter when the two were exhibitors at the Wood County Fair.
King says Wollter came to her house on Aug. 15 for an assessment. He drew up a blueprint and handed King a contract with the name 'Superior Construction Services' on it.
"The start date is no later than Aug. 22 [the contract] said," King explained.
She says the contract stated that Wollter would repair the leak for $1,200, with a down payment of $500 to be paid that day. The remaining balance could be paid in monthly payments of $75 starting Oct. 1.
After King signed the contract, she says Wollter cashed her down payment and never came back.
"It has been non-stop games ever since," she said. "He's made every other different excuse."
Meanwhile, the leaking roof has only gotten worse.
"It is developing in the wrong way, and it would be frustrating as a door greeter if I can't let someone in due to them getting harmed from leakage," she said.
She had used small buckets to catch water from the leak, but now it's one big garbage can.
Toledo News Now tried to call Wollter, but it went straight to voicemail. That's when Brandon Jones decided to pay him a visit at the address listed on King's contract.
Wollter told Jones he had every intention of fixing King's roof, but says every time he tried to work on the roof, it was raining. He also says he's still recovering from a car accident that happened after he was supposed to start working on the roof.
Wollter insisted he tried to call King numerous times and even offered to fix her roof once the snow melted. By the end of Jones' visit, Wollter agreed to do right by King.
Jones was able to return King's down payment to her. She has already secured a legitimate company to work on her roof.
Before you hire a contractor, there are a few things you need to do:
- Get recommendations from people you know and check with the state board of contractors.
- Ask the company to provide you with references and a free estimate of the work being done, including cost and labor.
- Always get a copy of your signed contract.
