Crystal Dixon Dixon promised to fight the university, saying she had hired many gays and lesbians at UT and that the column was a personal matter, a "divine mandate" to speak out against homosexuality.
Equality Toledo supports the university's decision to terminate Dixon's employment.TOLEDO -- The big news isn't that conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh has commented on former University of Toledo Human Resources Administrator Crystal Dixon's termination.
So we won't start there, though we will say that he compared the firing to something Joseph Stalin might have done. (See video, Crystal Dixon fights back, attached.)
Rather, we'll start with this: Crystal Dixon is firing back after losing her job, reports News 11's Tim Miller.
Before dozens of fellow church members at End Time Christian Fellowship Church on Wednesday, Dixon defended the column she recently wrote for Toledo Free Press in which she expresses her opinion on homosexuality.
Dixon promised to fight the university, saying she had hired many gays and lesbians at UT and that the column was a personal matter, a "divine mandate" to speak out against homosexuality.
"To say that I cannot have a personal opinion regarding the practice of some humans, and not be effective in my job as a human resources leader is preposterous," Dixon said.
Dixon's attorney was on hand to comment as well.
"Crystal Dixon does not hate gay people; she loves gay people as God's people also. The problem here is the University of Toledo. They have their agenda," said attorney Thomas Sobecki.
Dixon said she will file a lawsuit based on a violation of her First Amendment rights to free speech and racial and religious discrimination.
"No one should ever have to suffer the public humiliation and treatment that I have had to suffer for exercising my constitutional rights," Dixon said.
UT spokesman Matt Lockwood points out certain jobs at UT come with restrictions on what employees are allowed to express.
"Her views drew into question her ability to be inclusive and caused the university to conclude that she is unable to continue to function in her role," Lockwood said.
Equality Toledo, a gay rights organization, supports the university's actions against Dixon.
Michelle Stecker called Dixon's column "a direct attack on people who are gay and lesbian. The bible certainly does not condone that kind of hate speech."
