(WTOL) - For Tom Mims, who's always super-successful in his career, being unemployed has been a chance to step back and really reassess.

"If folks out there feel the same way I do that your family and your faith is that important. Use that time to become active in your church and be with your family as well as still spending quite a bit of your time with your new job, which is finding a job," says Mims.

Tom and Cynthia's four kids in particular haven't minded the career blip at all. Having dad behind that swing, or taking them to lunch or just a walk to the park has meant much more than any of the really expensive outings we parents think they'll enjoy so much. Tom's also focused on contacting old friends and coworkers which can also have a great networking benefit.

"It gives you a chance to catch up, but also an opportunity to connect even more with your family. I know I try to make a more prompt effort to talk to my Mom and Dad every week, and even more so look forward to those conversations because you're not so distracted about having to be at work the next day," he says.

And that family support can really critical during a difficult time. And that's come home in another unusual way. One big entertainment hit in the family now is free movies from the library, particularly episodes of the Waltons TV show profiling the depression-era family.

"To think of what we're going through right now really doesn't compare to what they went through and they still had a very fulfilling life. They loved their children, had faith in God, moved forward and got past it and our country is a better place for going through that experience," says Mims.

One of the more difficult things for the Mims is health insurance. Imagine the expense with four young kids, aged one to seven. Next time, how this family is coping with that issue.
