TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Toledo's mayor says the local economy can get back on track through major upgrades to its transportation network.

Toledo's mayor says a major investment and job creation can occur if local cargo handling capacity is expanded.

Finkbeiner says Toledo's intermodal is a huge part of economic renaissance in Northwest Ohio. "The sooner we get it the better."

Improvements are targeted at Norfolk Southern's Airline Junction rail yard.

"It basically will require some moving of track and some additional signalization and that's it, we don't have to take any residences away," says the Joint Intermodal Task Force's James Tuschman.

The Joint Intermodal Task Force reports a 4 million dollar commitment from Norfolk Southern, and the city is seeking 8.7 million dollars from Ohio.

The site at hill and fearing is connected to industrial properties by existing designated heavy truck routes, suitable for additional semi traffic.

"In 5 years our economic predictions say that there should be about 112 million dollars infused into this economy," says Rich Martinko of the Joint Intermodal Task Force.

Other transportation upgrades in the works include a new customs facility at Toledo Express Airport, and the Ironville Docks project at the former Chevron site.

"This area is ripe for this ripe for this type of development the question is can we get it done and can we start the process," says Tuschman.
