The University of Toledo has announced a new tuition scholarship program called The UT Guarantee. The goal is to make college a reality for kids who don't have enough money to pay for it and live in one of the 21 largest cities in Ohio.
These kids are at risk to give up on school. This scholarship gives them another choice. To qualify, a student must maintain a 3.0 grade point average and receive Federal Student Financial Aid.
UT will pay the difference between the cost of tuition and the amount of Federal Aid for which the student qualifies.
UT hopes that junior high and high school students will see this scholarship as another reason to remain in school and work hard.
This is exactly the kind of new thinking we need.
Our public school system is in deep trouble. It must seem like a waste of time to so many of the kids. Now they have hope, backed up by real money.
UT should be commended for this innovative approach. Well done.
