WATERVILLE TOWNSHIP (WTOL) - One person was killed and four were injured in an accident that closed both SR295 (Berkey Southern Rd.) and Waterville-Neapolis Rd. near the Village of Whitehouse around 9 a.m. Tuesday. The roads were closed in both directions for the whole morning; they are now open.

Police say that at about 8:45 a.m., a 2003 Honda Pilot driven by Richard R. Seel, 46, of Grand Rapids, Oh., was traveling northbound on SR295 when it was struck by a Mack tractor-trailer driven by James J. Gombash, 53, of Swanton, that was traveling eastbound on Neapolis-Waterville Rd.

Police say Gombash failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the Seel vehicle broadside. The tractor-trailer then struck a 1986 Chevrolet pickup that was stopped westbound on Neapolis-Waterville Rd. at the intersection.

Seel was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel. Regan L. Seel, 9, and Wyatt E. Seel, 13, were transported by air ambulance to Toledo Children's Hospital; they are in critical and serious condition, respectively. The driver of the pickup, Michael Ackerman, of Walbridge, Oh., was taken to St. Vincent-Mercy Medical Center by air ambulance; he is in serious condition. A passenger in the pickup, Thomas L. Magrum, 59, of Helena, Oh., was taken to St. Luke's Hospital.

Gombash was not injured.

An investigation is underway.
