GENOA, Ohio (WTOL) - The recent ATV accidents are just two of many this summer. But, injury and death can be prevented with a few easy safety precautions.

Perry Vanderburg has been racing his ATV across fields since he was twelve years old. He says it's a real rush.

"It's just an adrenaline thing. It's fast and it goes seventy miles an hour."

But most folks are buying their ATVs for farm work, mowing grass or snow removal. The sports market attracting kids like Perry is dwindling.

"There isn't a lot of trails around here to ride so you're seeing that market die off. You got money involved in owning a sports quad nowadays up there."

Still, for kids like Perry, there is the safety factor. He learned his lesson after taking a spill several years ago.

"Be smart. Be responsible and don't go fast," says Perry.

In addition, wear a helmet, goggles, boots and long pants. But most of all, avoid inclines.

"We see a lot of rollovers at our shop. Guys trying to go up or down creek beds and they roll over into the water. Just use common sense," DZ Motorsports' Rob Streiffert.

Common sense and putting yourself into a situation you can't get out of.

Anyone with a drivers license can drive an ATV. There are no requirements for taking a safety course.

But Rob at DZ Motorsports says it's a good idea to take one because you'll learn routine maneuvers like riding up and down hills and turning left and right.
