TOLEDO -- A normal day on the job turns dangerous for a Toledo Zoo keeper. The worker is out of the hospital after one of the tigers swiped him.

Tanieya Lewis was at the zoo and says this happened before the zoo opened to the public Sunday morning.

The Toledo Zoo keeper was going through his daily routine around 8:30 a.m. Sunday. He was giving the tigers their normal cleaning and feeding when one tiger reached his paw through a double mesh barrier and swiped the keeper's chest.

The keeper was treated for three minor chest lacerations and released from the hospital.

It happened at the Tiger Terrace where the two cats live. The tigers are around five years-old and are named Kat and Marta.

The tigers remained in their enclosure the entire time. The zoo says there was no risk to the public.

They are conducting a review of what happened

Toledo Zoo Director Dr. Anne Baker says, "I do want to stress that this was not keeper error. It was simply an unfortunate accident. I think the cat was just jumping up on the mesh to see if maybe there was any food coming. My guess is that...the cat was as surprised as the keeper."

News 11 is told the incident happened so quickly the keeper isn't sure which cat swiped him.

Neither the keeper or the tiger is in any trouble with the zoo.
