Fire Destroys Swanton House Overnight

SWANTON -- It was a tough fight for fire crews while you slept.  Three fire departments repsponded to a house fire on State Route 295, near Airport Highway in Swanton.  That's in western Lucas County.

Flames could be seen for up to a mile away from the burning house.  By the time fire crews got the first call around 2:00am, the house was already engulfed by the fire.

It took several hours to douse those flames.  Initially, firefighters thought there may be some one trapped inside, but they were not able to get in to search because of the heat and intensity of the fire.

The good news -- the family was not home at the tome, and no one was hurt.  "Basically, the worst part was getting it under control," said Assistant Fire Chief George Arnold of the Swanton Fire Department.  "Now we've just got to go back and dig through the rubble and put out the hot spots."

"It's gonna take a little work, but we'll get 'er done," added Arnold.

No one knows what started the fire.  It's not thought to be suspicious.

Toledo firefighters were also busy from Sunday night into Monday morning.  They had to put out a fire in a house in the 1800th block of Cone, near Isherwood.

When fire fighters arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the back of the home.  It spread into the attic.

They were able to stop the flames before they could do any damage to neighboring homes.

We're told that the house was vacant and in the process of being remodeled.  That fire is being called suspicious.
