Suspect in Double Homicide Appears in Court

NORTH TOLEDO -- Twenty-five-year-old Latrel Brown, the man suspected of killing Tammy Cappellety and Juan Ybarra last week, faced a judge for the first time Monday. Brown is charged with two counts of murder and is being held on a $500,000 bond on each count.

Police believe Brown and another person shot and killed 30-year-old Tammy Cappellety and 24-year-old Juan Ybarra while the two were sitting inside Tammy's car parked on Baker St. Police say they believe the killer fired the fatal shot from the back seat of the car and then took off.

Detectives say they did not find money or drugs at the crime scene, but that the killings could be drug-related. Detectives are still searching for a second suspect.

On Friday at about 9:30am, police arrested Brown in connection with the homicide. Tammy was married and the mother of three boys from a previous marriage. She managed the cleaning staff at the Knights Inn in Northwood. Juan Ybarra also had three children: two boys and a girl.

"Nobody knows what happened except Juan, and he can't tell us. He's got kids. They're going to know when they get older what happened," said Chriscinda Bobosky, Ybarra's former girlfriend and the mother of one of his children.

"You never in your life expect to go down and just deal with this.  It's like a bad dream," said Jamie Chase, who couldn't stop the tears from falling. Cappellety was her big sister, and Chase was asked by police to identify her after she was shot in the head in her car on Baker and Locust Street. Jamie said, "nothing makes sense to me. I don't understand why or how."

"Words can't explain what the family is going through," said Chuck Chase, Cappellety's adopted father. He said Ybarra was a friend of his daughter's, and that she was probably giving him a ride somewhere. But Chuck Chase said he has a hard time believing this double murder was drug-related.
