TOLEDO -- Plans are underway in Lucas County in case of a flu pandemic.
Dr. David Grossman and other health leaders with the Lucas County health department say the potential threat for bird flu is "real."
Dr. Grossman says the concern with the bird flu hasn't altered their philosphy or changed what they're doing. They have been looking at it, making some modifications to their plans, but they continue to work with levels of communication, making sure that the people who are knowledgeable and need to be mobilized that they would be mobilized in a time of need.
And while there is no available vaccine for avian flu at this time, there are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself.
"Hand washing, good hygiene is our number one rule, that remains true for avian flu, greyhound flu, you know any type of infectious disease to spread that way. Two, it may be a time to have some supplies at home, water, etc., in case of an outbreak and we say you have to stay home and quarantine you're there," said Dr. Grossman.
After 911, health leaders here in Toledo and across the country have been working with police, fire, and hospital officials for any potential bioterrorism attack or epidemic like bird flu.
