Jesus Pierogi Goes for $1775 on eBay

POINT PLACE -- The bidding is over!  A pierogi said to have the image of Jesus Christ on it sold for $1775 on the online auction site eBay.  Golden Palace Casino was the winner when all the bids were finished around 1:00pm Monday afternoon.

Bidding went up over $1,000 this past weekend, with more than 40,000 people viewing the auction.  In the end, Golden Palace got its winning bid posted with only 5 seconds remaining on the auction.

Donna Lee of Point Place first noticed it while cooking pierogi's on Easter. "The last one I flipped over was Jesus, so I flipped the spatula, and my husband goes, 'What? There's Jesus!' and he goes, 'Oh my God!'" said Donna. Her husband agreed, saying, "There's a face on our pierogi and we choose to believe on Easter it's Jesus."

The Lees have kept the pie in the freezer ever since.  In case you've never had one, a pierogi is a Polish delicacy like a dumpling made when dough is folded over a filling of meat, cheese, or vegetables, and cooked by boiling and then pan-frying in fat.  "They're usually browned one side and browned on the other but this one was the only one that didn't brown on both sides," said Donna. "It's very special and they've made a joke of me since April, so I don't know, it just means a lot to me."

The winner of the pierogi was Golden Palace Casino.  It has bought or sold some 160 items on eBay, including last fall's purchase of a grilled cheese sandwich with a vision of the Virgin Mary on it.  But this time, it was a bargain because the pierogi only went for $1775, while the sandwich went for $28,000.

"We seem to have an interest in all of these religious items," said Drew Black, a marketing spokesman for The casino has a collection of odd items, in addition to the Virgin Mary cheese sandwich, the casino owns a pretzel shaped like the Virgin Mary holding a baby Jesus, and a pregnancy test that allegedly belonged to Britney Spears.

Black said the pierogi will join a traveling museum that the online casino is creating for its collections.

Three bids were disqualified by the person running the auction for the Lees.  The bidders in those cases were said to not be communicating properly.  More than 45,000 people looked at the 7-day auction, making it one of eBay's more popular.  There are also several auctions on the site mimmicking the pierogi, hoping to cash in on its popularity.
