Child Rape Suspect Brutally Beaten

HARDING TOWNSHIP -- 48-year-old Antonio Gonzalez is charged with raping a five-year-old child. According to the Lucas County Sheriff's Office, Gonzalez sexually assaulted the young girl at a house in Harding Township early Sunday morning.

Investigators say another person in the house got up about 2:00 a.m. to check on the girl who was supposed to be sleeping. The resident found the child and the suspect in a bedroom, both nude, and covered with oil.

Gonzalez reportedly jumped out of a window and was then beaten by neighbors and family members. Deputies found Gonzalez on the side of the road with a fractured skull. As of Sunday night, he was listed in serious condition at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Deputies say investigating a rape involving a child presents some special challenges. "Due to the tender age of the victim, she's five years old, we try to determine the truth of what transpired. Based on what we've learned, everything checks out, she was adamant about what transpired," said Sergeant Ephron Linzy.

According to crime reports, deputies recovered bed sheets, pillows and clothing at the scene which indicate a sexual assault happened. Deputies also tell News 11 Gonzalez reportedly drank alcohol and smoked crack cocaine in the hours leading up to the rape.

This isn't the first time Gonzalez has been in trouble with the law. News 11 has learned he's been booked at the Lucas County Jail 16 times since 1992.

His most recent arrest was last month for non-payment of child support. He's also been charged with domestic violence, violating a protection order and menacing.
