More Jobs Coming to Toledo Shiprepair

TOLEDO -- Toledo Shiprepair company, a division of Manitowac's Marine group announced a major building contract today.

Toledo Shiprepair will soon start building oil barges for an east coast company. They'll be almost 400-feet long, and carry 110,000 barrells.

This is the first building contract Toledo Shiprepair has seen in fifteen years. The barge is scheduled for delivery to the east coast a year from now. The company has the option to buy three more just like it. They'll hire about 125 skilled workers.

"We're here on the Maumee river. We're the crossroads of the Great Lakes. We've always been a shipping center, but for a long time we haven't had the ship building and ship repair capacity operating here. It will be restored now," said Toledo congresswoman Marcy Kaptur.

The port authority will also upgrade the shipyard to make the area better suited for shipbuilding work.

The project will cost more than $7 million. The money will come from the city, county and federal governments.
