Local Methodist church sponsors controversial billboard

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Is being gay "a gift", or "a sin?" Members of Central United Methodist Church are taking their message to the streets, by sponsoring a billboard campaign proclaiming "Being gay is a gift from God."

"All persons are of sacred worth and who they are is the way God created them to be," Rev. Bill Barnard said.

The campaign aims to push a religious movement towards tolerance and acceptance, and help the healing process for those who have experienced hurt or discrimination.

However at Trilby United Methodist Church, Pastor Waverly Earley strongly disagrees.

"The theology on the billboard is inaccurate. If you're having sex outside the relationship of marriage, which is defined by God in the Bible as between a man and a woman. We try to love the person, accept them as a person of worth; however the lifestyle is not acceptable to God," said Earley.

The billboards are part of a month-long sermon series at Central United Methodist.
