TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – As the Chinese president visits the U.S., some wonder if improved relations between the two nations could benefit northwest Ohio's economy.

In fact, just months after Toledo Mayor Mike Bell's visit to China, folks are buzzing about Chinese investors potentially buying up property in the Glass City.

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur says she has voiced concern about the possibility of Chinese investment in Toledo because she believes it would be a calculated move by the government, rather than individuals looking for opportunity.

However, Lucas County Improvement Corporation President Ford Weber says any kind of new investment is just what the area needs.

"Wouldn't it be great if our community established a reputation as being one of the best places for Chinese to invest their money, how could there possibly be anything bad about that?" said Weber.

Weber says he is not surprised the Marina District and The Docks are two of the rumored targets.

"Everybody that comes to Toledo is amazed we have all this riverfront property that's just waiting for development," said Weber.

Additionally, he says any influx of cash into the community would pave the way for jobs.

While some have criticized the mayor for his China trip, Weber applauds the effort and says Bell is a tremendous ambassador for the region.

"One of the best ways we could use the mayor is to send him overseas to cultivate investment in our community," said Weber.
