TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - A contagious stomach virus called Norovirus is starting to go around. In one Michigan city, a school was shut down after 120 students and staff became sick.

Norovirus infection is highly contagious and hits fast and hard.

Those who may have Norovirus will exhibit the following symptoms:

  • nausea,
  • abdominal pain and cramps,
  • diarrhea,
  • weight loss,
  • fatigue and
  • low-grade fever.

Dr. Sanjay Mardolkar of Mercy Children's Hospital says the biggest challenge is that the Norovirus spreads quick.

"This virus has been so contagious, even a small amount of the virus can cause a disease."

Catching the Norovirus is fairly easy. Someone infected can spread it by not washing their hands properly or it can be caught by touching a surface or object with the virus.

The symptoms generally lasts about 2 days but you can still spread it to others for up to 3 days after the symptoms go away.

Bottom line is that good old fashion prevention is the best medicine.

"If you really don't want to suffer from the disease, I think it is always good to wash your hands very well," Dr Mardolkar advises.
