BEDFORD, MI (WTOL) -  In a 4-2 vote that took place Tuesday evening at Monroe Road Elementary School in Temperance, the Bedford School Board laid off 46 teachers.

Several people spoke out against the decision, including Smith Road Elementary physical education teacher Natalie Ewing, who told the board that losing her job is very difficult for her, especially considering her 3-year-old's illness.

"With me losing my job, it loses my insurance. I can't get her the help that I need to get her," Ewing told the board.

Some parents spoke out against the board majority.

"If you continue to increase our classroom sizes, the children are going to suffer," said parent Sandy Crane.

Board member Mike Smith voted against the layoffs. "At some point, someone has got to stand up and say enough is enough. We need funding to educate our children; they're our future and that's why I voted no."

Board President Shawna Smith said with retirements looming, all but 12 could be called back.

The board will hold a Town Hall meeting next Tuesday night to detail where the cuts are coming from.
