TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Toledo Mayor Mike Bell visited Wood County Tuesday to hear ideas on how to fix the budget.

He joined with 71 other mayors at the annual meeting of the Northwest Ohio Mayors and Managers Association, which took place in Pemberville.

Fremont Mayor Terry Overmyer says though his city has been conservative in recent years and has a "rainy day fund" to fall back on, a minor budget deficit still looms.

"I've seen when we've been bringing a lot of jobs in our community," Overmyer said. "I've seen the income tax at all-time highs, and I now am seeing ourselves looking at layoffs, facing the kind of issues that all these communities are facing."

Green Springs Mayor Ted Rutherford says his city actually has a $1.2 million surplus, due largely to the Elmwood at the Springs retirement home, the village's biggest employer, which uses 50 percent of the water and produces 60 percent of the income tax.

Bell said he's listening to all ideas. "There are things to be learned about people who have surpluses and being able to make sure that we somehow copy that progressive style of government."
