Commissioners approve agreement to try and open Wonderland

Posted: Updated:

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio (WTOL) - County Commissioners approved a plan Tuesday to work with a private donor to try and open the long-running Children's Wonderland exhibit sometime between now and Christmas. The wonderland exhibit was not scheduled to open this year due to budget cuts.

Terms of the agreement are not finalized, including where the exhibit would be set up. Commissioners say it is certain that the exhibit will not be at the County Rec Center as in previous years.

Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop, and radio personality Andrew Z of WKVS 92.5 KISS FM have launched an effort to get volunteers to help save the exhibit. You can read their press release below.

A press release

TOLEDO, Ohio - Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop, and radio personality Andrew Z of WKVS 92.5 KISS FM said Monday they have a plan to save Children's Wonderland.

Last week Lucas County commissioners said Children's Wonderland, which has run for the past 46 years at the Lucas County Rec Center in Maumee, will not run due to the prolonged budget crunch .

In order for the plan to work, Commissioner Konop and Andrew Z said volunteers are needed to staff the exhibit.

The plan calls for the display to open at an unnamed location within Lucas County. The exhibit will be open for a limited number of hours and there would be an admission.

Konop said they would use admission to pay for utilities, but there is no money to pay a staff. The plan now includes volunteers to possibly staff the display.

If interested in volunteering, you are asked to e-mail mailto:savechristmasintoledo@gmail.com .

The county commissioners are expected to vote a land contract agreement during their Tuesday morning meeting.
