WYANDOT COUNTY , Ohio (WTOL) - Wyandot County paramedic Kurt Clark arrived at a crash in Upper Sandusky to discover the victims were his own parents. It happened on US-23 between County Road 50 and County Road 121 in Upper Sandusky Saturday afternoon.
Richard and Sue Clark were driving northbound on US- 23. They were headed to their grandson’s high school play when another car hit them from behind. They ended up going crashing into the median and flipping their Chevy Trailblazer.
The couple’s son Kurt Clark, an EMT for Wyandot County, had no idea his own parents were trapped inside. They had borrowed the Chevy since their car was in the shop.
Clark was working on the female patient, when he heard his nephew Daniel from the back seat. “And he kept telling me, ‘Uncle Kurt, it's me.’ So then I realized… there had to be somebody in the front seat that I knew. And it happened to be mom and dad,” said Clark.
He held his mom's head in place, while other EMS crews used the Jaws of Life to free his mother and father.
Clark says the paramedic in him took over. He knows being there comforted his mom because she calmed down and knew it was him by the sound of his voice.
“I wouldn't have wanted it to be anybody else in there…. I wouldn't say I saved their lives, I did my job,” said Clark.
“I know he definitely played a huge role in getting them to calm down and getting them to where they are now. We thank him and we sure are proud of him for it,” said Joe Clark, Kurt’s brother.
Richard Clark is in critical condition at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with spinal injuries and a collapsed lung. Sue Clark has been upgraded to fair. Both expected to survive.
Clark’s nephew has been released from the hospital.
