WOOD COUNTY, Ohio (WTOL) - Four nursing students filed a lawsuit in Wood County Common Pleas Court Thursday against Owens Community College after they found out in October the school's nursing program had lost national accreditation.

The students say their last two years at Owens were wasted in a cover-up and want monetary damages to make up for lost job opportunities and education.

Students were shocked when they found out in mid-October their two year nursing degrees from Owens would come without national accreditation.

Attorney Chuck Boyk says at least four students have asked for his help to reveal what he calls  a school cover-up.

"Accepting tuition money through the nursing students' enrollment can be viewed as fraudulent misrepresentation. Had the students known in July that the nursing program has lost its accreditation, they might have had time transfer to another school. With Owens only releasing in October the fact that they lost their accreditation, it was too late for any other school to accept students into their programs," said Boyk.

Owens nursing program's new Vice Provost Renay Scott says, "The one issue that the National League of Nursing identified back, I think it was in 2006, said the institution needed to address its faculty credentials.".

Dr. Scott's understanding was the school would notify students as soon as Owens decided it would be better to pursue reaccreditation again.

Dr. Scott says the school has already filed papers work to get reaccredited.

As frustrations build, more students look for help from attorneys.
