SYLVANIA, Ohio (WTOL) - Folks at the Sylvania Senior Center say they want the Lucas County Senior Services Levy to pass in the Nov. 3 election.

The center in Sylvania is one of the places funded by the tax. The levy is a five-year, 0.45 mil replacement levy to help seniors stay independent. Supporters stress it is not a new tax.

The annual cost to the owner of a $100,000 home will be $13.78 cents, which works out to about four cents per day.

Seniors say the services funded by the levy make their lives more fulfilling.

"I don't drive. I don't go to too many places. If they don't have the busses, I'm out of luck," said Levy Supporter Carol Stachowiak.

Others said they come to the senior center three to four times a week to eat lunch and do exercises such as Wii bowling.

The levy also provides services for people with Alzheimer's disease, medical transportation and more.

"I get the home delivered meals. That helps tremendously," said Levy Supporter Daniel Person.

The levy money is used to match federal and state resources, which expands the care and services available.

Normally, levies for senior citizens do well at the polls. However, Billie Johnson with the Area Office on Aging says it's never guaranteed, especially in a recession. "I know it's tough for a lot of families. That's why we didn't ask for an increase."
