MUNISING, Mich. (AP) - Alger has become the latest county in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where the tree-killing emerald ash borer has been detected.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture said Friday that an adult insect was confirmed on a trap in Munising. The exotic beetle has devastated tens of millions of ash trees in several states. The ash borer also has been found in Mackinac, Chippewa, Schoolcraft, Delta and Houghton counties.
Officials also said Friday that 11 adult ash borers were confirmed on a trap near Brimley in Chippewa County. They were in an area currently under quarantine near Brimley State Park where an eradication effort took place in 2006.
The beetles found in Munising and near Brimley were collected over the summer as part of a national survey.
