Wife of Putnam County sheriff pleads guilty to felony theft

Posted: Updated:

(WTOL) - The wife of the Putnam County Sheriff pleaded guilty Wednesday to a felony theft charge.

Kathy Beutler blames her stealing on trying to pay off credit card debt. She could face 5 years in prison.

Investigators say she stole between $100,000 and $500,000 from the Ohio Farmer's Union in Ottawa during a 4-year period. She was the treasurer of the group that represents more than 300,000 family farmers nationwide.

Her husband says his wife's case caught him by surprise.
