TOLEDO -- Could boaters and anglers on the Great Lakes could be the next targets for homeland security?
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer says the U.S. border with Canada through the lakes is a neglected weak point.
The Democrat from New York wants congress to spend about $600 million to tighten security on the lakes.
Boats that cross the lakes to the United States are required to report their arrival to the U.S. Customs Service. Schumer says agency statistics show on 10% of boats reported to customs last year.
The Senator says almost all those boats are innocent, but all it would take is one mistake to cause a major disaster.
