SYLVANIA (WTOL) - A new apartment complex will break ground in Sylvania on Wednesday.
The J.C. Hart Company will begin construction of the 5.5 luxury apartments that will be built south of Monroe Street (SOMO) in two phases.
The company says Phase 1 will be 206 apartment homes, a club house, pool and underground parking. The second phase will build a 13,000-square foot building for commercial or office use.
In the last few years, Sylvania has been on an economic incline with no shortage of storefronts and restaurants.
“I think downtown has really come alive with all the downtown development. It’s bringing more people from different areas. I think it’s just a great little city and it’s thriving,” Sylvania resident Carrie Howard said.
The apartments will be a mix of one, two and three bedrooms with monthly rents ranging from $750 to $1,500.
The city of Sylvania expects to see $30 million from the new apartment complex.
On another effort to bring business to Sylvania, a new law made it legal for people to drink and walk around with alcohol in designated areas. The Downtown Outdoor Recreation Area, DORA, passed on an unanimous vote Monday.
“I think the DORA will be very beneficial. We do have alcohol here as well so we will be a benefactor as well. It will allow customers to be more encouraged to anticipate and they can also walk around,” Kate Long from Chandler Cafe said.
