TOLEDO (WTOL) - The Alliance Française de Toledo, which has been teaching the French language and culture in the area for decades, announced its commitment to help rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral.
The organization started a two-month campaign to raise money. “I think every dollar, every cent will be helpful in reconstructing something for future generations,” Alliance Française de Toledo president, Elizabeth Dupuy, said.
Dupuy said the Notre Dame Cathedral is an iconic monument and so much more. “It’s a place of worship, a place of peace and encounters. Everybody from different faiths can come visit the Cathedral. It’s a piece of art,” she said.
She said part of humanity was lost in the fire, and students of the Alliance agree.
Many have visited as tourists. One of them, Karen Soubeyrand, said she was overwhelmed both times she saw the inside. She wishes she experienced it more recently, having only passed by in her latest trips to the city.
“I feel a part of it. Sad to say that I haven’t been inside in the last decade. I kind of regret that,” Soubeyrand said.
Fellow student, Tom Heferle said “It’s a beautiful, beautiful sight. You can just feel the intensity of the architecture and the art and the sanctity of it too.”
The students were all shocked to hear the news about the fire. “To see that happen, you realize everything is vulnerable,” Soubeyrand said.
