Northwest Ohio animal lovers celebrate National Pet Day

TOLEDO (WTOL) - Thursday was the day to give a little extra love to your furry, feathered and even slimy family members...not that you needed an excuse or anything.

Valerie Scales came out to Humane Ohio from Sandusky at the recommendation of the Erie County Humane Society. She lauded both organizations.

“I am here to get my babies neutered and spayed because of their health and I didn’t want any more kitties running around my house. It’s very important," she said.

It’s always great day to adopt a pet from any of our local shelters, or as the folks at Toledo Animal Rescue say, it’s a good time to work on that checklist.

“It’s a great chance to make sure your pet’s up to date on their vaccines, great chance to make sure your contact information is up to date on microchips and licenses, and it’s a great time to schedule your pet’s annual wellness exam with your veterinarian,” Johanna Rahkonen of Toledo Animal Rescue said.

Don’t have a pet of your own? That’s okay! Many of our local shelters need volunteers and offers to care for the animals while they’re there.

You can also help by donating blankets, food and toys to make the animals stay at the shelter more like home. Monetary donations are always welcome as well, especially as many of these places are non-profits that rely on the community for help.

“Behind us we have some of our cats that are in for their spay and neuter surgeries today, so a lot of pet parents don’t realize this, but spaying and neutering is super beneficial for the health of your animal. It could prevent a lot of scary complications," Kaylie Spotts of Humane Ohio explained.

For those pets at home, you could also consider having a National Pet Day party, or at least an extra treat or two to celebrate.

Anyone interested in volunteering, adopting or donating, to at Humane Ohio can do so here.

Donations can also be made to the oldest no-kill shelter in Toledo, Toledo Animal Rescue here. They are happy to receive your help.
