TOLEDO (WTOL) - Summer is right around the corner, and if we want to be healthy and look better, there are ways to still workout, but save money.

Stretching Your Dollar: Get in shape without breaking the bank

You can join a gym. We have a lot of great ones here: Super Fitness and LA Fitness are the bigger shops. But you can also get a really good workout in the comfort of your home.

Jeff de Groff from HomeBody Xtreme Fitness in Temperance has been a trainer for about ten years. Whether you’re there or at home, he says cross training is the best way to trim up; a combination of lifting weights, jumping, running or body weight exercises.

Jeff recommends exercises like using a chair to do a tricep dip, squats and the inch worm among others to burn some calories.

To get started, you need just a little equipment. A full body workout with weights is great for dropping a few pounds, better than aerobics, actually.

“You can buy weights dirt cheap. People want to get weights out of their house, so they give them away. That’s the best way to go. I have so many weights here I got off Facebook and saved a ton of money, and on YouTube you can find hundreds and hundreds of workout videos you can do right in your living room.”

Need more motivation? Some tips from those who know:

  • Make a commitment. Don’t choose to join, choose to workout every day even if you don’t feel like it.
  • For those who want to get results, weightlifting is the way to go.

Again, you can workout at home. If you join a gym, they’re an extra $10 a month and up.

It doesn’t matter where you choose to go, if you put in the work, it will pay off.
