WHITEHOUSE (WTOL) - Nature’s Nursery in Whitehouse is known for giving local wildlife in our area veterinarian care.

Now, they are packed to the brim with even more animals to shelter from this cold.

A blue heron was found near Bowling Green, frozen to the ground.

He's now recovering inside of Nature's Nursery along with many other local critters.

Opossums, geese, rabbits, squirrels, hawks, even bats and a flying squirrel are all being sheltered from this week’s arctic air inside.

Nature's Nursery usually tends to animals with serious injuries, but operations director Laura Zitzelberger says this extreme cold can compound even minor ailments and in turn become fatal.

Other animals already being cared for had to be moved inside their main building to ensure they stayed warm.

The clinic has seen more and more animals over the years, because with urban sprawl, these creatures are constantly being moved out of their natural habitat.

“With every new housing development that goes up, they’re trying to find another place to live. And they’re kind of making due, instead of having the ideal habitat that they would normally have. So again, they aren’t able to make the best choices for themselves, and when something like this hits, it really impacts them,” said Zitzelberger.

The busy season for Nature’s Nursery actually picks up once spring rolls around. So, if you’re interested in donating or volunteering, you can take a look on their website.
