Local homeless shelter prepares for subzero temperatures

Currently, City Mission in Findlay is housing 80 to 85 people overnight, and serving 150 to 200 meals a day.

FINDLAY (WTOL) - Winter is already a busy time for local homeless shelters, and they are preparing for even more people than usual this week.

Currently, City Mission in Findlay is housing 80 to 85 people overnight, and serving 150 to 200 meals a day.

That’s already on the higher end, and the mission said they are constantly close to reaching their capacity.

But now they are preparing for even more people looking for a place to sit out the bitter cold this week.

So, they have planned to set out cots and sleeping bags to make sure anyone in the Findlay area who doesn’t have a warm place to sleep can find one there.

They are also letting people know that you don’t have to register to stay overnight and open their doors to people during the daytime as well.

“So, anybody who is outside or don’t have proper heat or anything like that; you can stop in and we have a room available for people to just kind of sit and be warm. We serve lunch and dinner available as well, so people sometimes come in and hang out a little during those times,” said Ruthie Tong, operations manager with City Mission.

And, even though this stretch of below 0 degree temperatures is only supposed to last a few days; the folks at City Mission want to remind you that we have a lot of winter still ahead of us.

And they will gladly take donations of hats, gloves, and winter coats for all ages.
