Downtown is ready ahead of Saturday snow and events

Downtown snow prep

TOLEDO (WTOL) - Tons of thousands of people are planning to come to downtown Toledo over the weekend for a variety of events. That includes the ECHL All-Star weekend.

Key leaders laid out how they’re planning to accommodate all those visitors in the winter weather Friday.

Toledoans have been looking forward to hosting the ECHL All-Star game for two years now.

The game isn’t until Monday, but on Saturday, when the snow storm is headed our way, Winter Brewfest is scheduled to happen outside at Fifth Third Field on the concourse.

Knowing this was coming, the city has planned ahead.

“We have a plan put in place for hauling snow out of downtown if that happens to come across being necessary, so we have other divisional already set up to do specifically that," Jeremy Mikolajczyk Commissioner, City of Toledo Streets Bridges and Harbor explained.

In addition to All-Stars, the SeaGate Centre is hosting an event where cheerleaders are raising money for cancer research, and the Toledo Repertoire Theater is hosting a show all weekend as well.

It’s up to each venue to decide what they’re going to do and up to each property owner to shovel their sidewalks.

“Our Ambassador team is going to be fully staffed tomorrow. If something happens, or any of the events need to adjust their times, we’ll let parking lot operators know, we’ll try and get the word out to our restaurants so they know how to prepare for that, but everyone’s assuming that we’re just going forward with our events and all the fun for the weekend," Cindy Kerr, Vice President of ConnecToledo and DowntownToledo.org said.

In advance of the snow storm, city crews applied brine to main routes, hauled salt to both city salt barns, installed plows on small city trucks and inspected all of their standard larger plows.

If need be. they are planning on bringing in sister divisions and private plows as well.

The city encourages residents and visitors to also plan ahead tonight, and allow extra time to get where you're going.
