TOLEDO (WTOL) - The Mud Hens on Thursday announced additions to the coaching staff for the defending IL West Division Champions.
Mike Hessman, the home run king of Minor League Baseball and the Mud Hens, is joining the team as hitting coach for the 2019 season.
Hessman was a member of the Mud Hens' Governors Cup Championship teams in 2005 and 2006. He hit a total of 433 home runs during his minor league career between 1996 and 2015. That includes 288 home runs with four teams in the International League (Toledo, Richmond, Buffalo, Louisville), with 184 of those coming in a Toledo uniform.
Toledo native Mientkiewicz guided the Mud Hens to the division title last year, which was his first with Toledo. He’s the seventh person to manage the Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field and the 55th in Toledo baseball history.
Nieves spent three seasons as pitching coach of the Miami Marlins. He played for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1986-1988 and threw a no-hitter on April 15, 1987 against Baltimore.
Cabrera returns to the Hens for his fourth season. He previously played outfield for the Detroit Tigers from 1986-1992
